Hex Cougar returns to BREAK ROOM on July 25 with “FANTASY,” a euphoric hardwave anthem steeped in the golden era of melodic trap and future bass. Swirling with radiant nostalgia and next-gen precision, the track taps into the raw energy that first pulled listeners into the genre, now reimagined through Hex’s multidimensional lens.
Anchored by a looping, impassioned vocal hook, “FANTASY” shimmers with celestial synthwork and glitch-washed breakdowns. Shedding light on some of the inspiration figures he channeled for his follow-up offering, Hex Cougar shares: “‘FANTASY’ is a love letter to the early sounds that first pulled me into the world of future bass and melodic trap over a decade ago—artists like Rustie and Hudson Mohawke. I still remember hearing ‘Glass Swords’—Rustie’s debut album—for the first time in my college apartment and feeling completely floored. Around that time, I was also deep into Lex Luger. Hearing the hip-hop trap percussion he pioneered fused with electronic synths and textures was completely intoxicating.”
“FANTASY” marks a rare tonal shift for Hex, trading his signature brooding textures for a brighter, more buoyant atmosphere that still carries his hallmark emotional depth. The single follows his ‘Embody’ EP on BREAK ROOM, a five-track odyssey that landed praise from Trap City, UKF, EDM Identity, and Exron Music, while drawing co-signs from Illenium, Zeds Dead, Alison Wonderland, NGHTMRE, SLANDER, JAWNS, and more.
