Exclusive Interview With Portuguese Project Dirty Sound Boys

Dirty Sound Boys release “Magic,” their new single with Tech Bass fusion.

Portuguese project Dirty Sound Boys return with a dazzling single titled “Magic” under the record label, HEXAGON.

With Tech Bass influences, the project joins the summer season to present “Magic”, their single with fresh and vibrant dance notes, guaranteeing a fun and interesting musical fusion; scheduled for June 9. With this release, Dirty Sound Boys marks their second return to the HΞXHIBITION label this year and also their sixth effort to release with Don Diablo.

The name of the track comes from the same sample that is in the chorus before the drop: “If you can’t tell me about your dreams, show me what is your Magic”. When I found this magical place, with this combination of love, sun and sea, at Cabedelo Beach, Viana do Castelo, Portugal, it became irresistible. Once again we owe our gratitude to the label for continuing to support our signature sound, the ‘Tech Bass.'”, says Dirty Sound Boys.

“Magic” is a journey through time that evokes emotions, taking listeners on a musical journey of nostalgia.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

1) How did you first get into DJing and producing electronic dance music?

I got into Djing when I was around 6..7 years old because of my father. He was the owner of a Bar called “Bar Académico”. The deejay both looked like a boat from the navy ahaha. The first time that I got there, the resident deejay, Dj Márcio was playing Bob Sinclair house tunes and everyone at the dancefloor was screaming so loud!! So I asked my dad if I could go to the deejay booth, he said yes and took me there. Then I saw Dj Márcio playing all night with vinyl and it was there when this musical journey began. A few years later, when I was 9 years old, I moved to Porto and then I decided to start learning more about music production at Soundbooking academy and improving my deejay skills at Dance Planet Dj School.

2) Who are some of your biggest influences in the industry?

Matroda, Chris Lake, Fisher, Mau P, Hugel, John Summit and Dom Dolla are my actual main influences and references.

3) Can you walk us through your process for creating a new track?

First of all it depends a lot on my mood, the vibe I’m into, the people around me, the energy that I feel makes me start the process. There’s no rule in Music at all about where to start, sometimes I come up with the melody that I got in my head looping around, sometimes I start with the kick & bassline and then add some catchy drum loops to make it spicy and sexy. Every song has a singular process, different meanings and inspirations.

4) How do you prepare for a gig? Do you have any pre-performance rituals or routines?

I always spend some weeks closed in the studio ahaha selecting my own records and ID’s. Then I do VIP Edits & Remixes for every track that I play in my sets, all the performance has to be exclusive. The people that pay the ticket to see you deserve that! Every gig is a different journey so it makes sense for me to play something that they have never heard before.

5) What has been your favorite gig or event to play at so far in your career?

Meo Sudoeste last year was one for the books! It was the best night of my career so far, it was packed with 20 thousand people jumping and screaming, the Portuguese crowd is the best in the world!

7) Can you share any memorable experiences or anecdotes from your time as a DJ and producer?

Meo Sudoeste was one of the best experiences, after the gig we stayed there for the whole week at the camping having fun with other deejays & artists! Some anecdotes hmmm, when I started to play small clubs in Porto, my hometown, the owners wanted to pay me with free drinks, and if I wanted to play in a better spot in the lineup I had to put 20 people on the guestlist…It’s sad but It’s true, that is the reality that every portuguese upcoming Deejay has to face in the beginning.

8) How do you stay current and find new music to play at your gigs?

At the moment It’s all in my inbox ahaha the major labels send me all the new music some weeks or months before their releases so I’m always updated.

9) What’s next for you in terms of new projects or goals?

My main goals at the moment are to play outside of Portugal, to take my music across the globe and make people smile when they listen to it! Can’t wait to show you all the collabs I’m working on!

10) In your free time, what do you like to do outside of music? Do you have any hobbies or passions outside of the industry?

I’ve always been a radical sport addict since I was young ahaha I’m my free time I love to go skateboarding, surfing with my friends and I also do lessons for people that want to learn. These kinds of sports inspire me and make me feel free.

11) How do you adapt your sets to fit the energy and vibe of the crowd at each gig?

I always look at the people’s faces when I’m playing, reading the crowd makes me aDJust the energy of my sets. I got a thousand tracks to play so I can vary and switch between genres based on what the crowd needs and of course, the music that I like.

12) What are some challenges you’ve faced as a DJ and how have you overcome them?

The beginning was the hardest part for me, when you are still learning how the night events work, you don’t know where your music can be appreciated to get the recognition that you deserve as an artist. For the future I have the challenge to go on with my journey and crossing borders with my Tech Bass Sound.

13) How do you think the electronic dance music industry has changed since you first started out?

This industry has changed so much since I started!! Everyone can be a Deejay nowadays Ahaha . The social media made it go so mainstream, everybody is able to make it into this world if you have a great team, but not everyone knows the secret to produce a summer hit.

14) What do you hope to achieve with your music in the long-term?

A tour around the world, take my sound to the best places in the world like Mexico, Italy, Spain and the US of course. Can’t wait to meet all the fans all over the globe!

15) Can you share any tips or advice for aspiring DJs and producers who are just starting out in the industry?

For every upcoming deejay my best advice is: invest time in yourself, learn constantly about music production and the artists you admire, listen to all genres of music, not only the ones you play in your Dj Set, the more you diversify the more inspiration you will get! Don’t you ever think to give up, remember, nobody started from the top, you’ll have to work harder than everyone else if you want to get there!
