EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

1. Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

I’d say the first track that I gained some real attention for was “Time and Again.” I remember getting some coverage for that track and it currently sits around 53-54k plays on Spotify. As far as my start goes, I’ve always been into music heavy. As a child, I sung in the church choir and I was always writing little tunes. It was a natural progression that eventually lead me to producing hiphop music around 2007 before settling into EDM several years later.

2. Tell us about your latest project “Take Me Higher”

Around the time I was producing and writing this track, I’d just gotten out of a dating situation. I felt like there had to be something much better out there. Lovers come and go in your life, but when you meet that once in a lifetime type of person, it’s something you’ve never felt before. All the pieces just come together and it’s one of those really beautiful moments in life.

3. Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you?

Interestingly enough, I was a police officer once upon a time. I went from growing up hating police to becoming police. I’m one of those people that if I see things I don’t like, I go out and try to change things myself. That’s a story for a different day though ha. Also, I was signed to a Division I school right out of high school to play softball.

4. What single night out has been most memorable for you as a DJ and producer?

I performed in Los Angeles and had an absolute blast. I loved working the stage and interacting with the crowd. That’s one of my favorite memories. I also did a set for the IVoted Festival which was really cool. It was so satisfying to use my platform and music to encourage people to get out and vote.

5. Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

I have two. My songs “Time and Again” and “Suicide Bay.” They both tell really important stories about certain eras/times in my life. Tragedy with a dash of hope is the best way to describe them. Whenever I’m down, I put those tracks on repeat.

6. Dream collaboration and why?

This is so hard! It’d have to be Rihanna or Ariana Grande. They’re both amazing artists and I’m a fan of their music in general.

7. If you could play any festival, which would it be?

EDC or Tomorrowland.

8. How do you get a track started? tell us about your production process

I start with the hook usually. I start with the chords and slowly begin to layer and work on the soundscape. The song progresses naturally from there. The last part completed is always the lyrics. To be honest, I feel as though songs write themselves in a way.

9. Upcoming projects? What are you currently working on?

I’m working on a few tracks as we speak. One is a dance/pop/house track that’s heavy on the melodies and the other is and ethereal/dance/ pop track that’s a bit more haunting. Both tracks are pretty catchy and I look forward to releasing them both.

10. The relationship between a DJ and the audience is crucial, and yet is seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

You have to be inventive and innovative. It comes down to compromise. You can use some of the more known methods and play some of the more known songs to appease the crowd, while putting your own twist or flavor on it. Keep things fresh and switch things up. Be open and have fun; you can take the temperature of the crowd and find a happy medium.
