Exclusive Interview with Josh Charm and His Latest Release on STMPD RCRDS

Josh Charm’s brand new track ‘U Got Me’ featuring FERGO is a very special one!

Passionate about helping others, Charm decided to launch a DEMO OF THE WEEK concept series a while ago which highlights helping upcoming producers by providing them with feedback. One of the producers who sent him a demo was FERGO.  “I got this demo and instantly loved it, asking for the stems. FERGO, a Spanish upcoming producer, who created the demo was more than happy to send them over”, Josh says. Charm finalized the track with his own touch and gave it its official name ‘U Got Me’. The main inspiration behind the track is shining a light on those who feel down during this pandemic.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

My first tracks in the EDM scene were Praying, followed by ‘Feel so good’, both signed on Spinnin’ Records early 2019. A lot has changed since then, I got the chance to release an EP ‘Desolate’ on Tiesto’s label AFTR:HRS and ultimately I was able to release several tracks on STMPD RCRDS and signed there in September 2020, which was a dream came true. The support and guidance I received from industry professionals and DJ’s in the scene was amazing since I started this journey.

Tell us about your latest project ‘U Got Me’

My latest project ‘U Got Me’ is an incredibly special project to me as it came to me as a demo via e-mail in my DEMO OF THE WEEK series. One of my concepts which highlights helping up & coming producers through feedback, thus the name ‘Josh Charm Helps’. I got this demo and instantly loved it, asking for the stems to work on it further. Sergio (FERGO) a Spanish up & coming producer, who send demo was more than happy to send them over. I finalized the song together with the feedback from the A&R’S at STMPD what is now called “U Got Me”.

Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you?

When I was a child I wanted to become a professional football (soccer) player. I have always been persistent and liked the idea of playing in the champions league 🙂 If you would ask my team mates then what kind of person I was, they will tell you I was always persistent, driven and passionate about what I do, together with others and pursuing my goals. This hasn’t changed in my field today as a DJ / Producer.

4. What single night out has been most memorable for you as a DJ and producer?

Definitely, 2019 ADE, hanging out and meeting guys like Tijs (Tiësto), Martijn (Martin Garrix) and being introduced to a lot more wonderful artists who I can consider friends.

5. Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

Toto – Africa, my all-time favorite record

Dream collaboration and why?

My dream collaboration, that’s a hard one. There are so many awesome artists out there nowadays. I’ve I had to make a top three it would be Dennis Ferrer, Kevin Saunderson or YTRAM. Dennis & Kevin as they are just such iconic House music legends and it would be an honor. YTRAM as I love what he’s working on and doing. Both artistically and personally I’ve respect for Martijn, how he guides me with STMPD and we just click well so I think the sessions would also be super spontaneous and fun. I also choose for STMPD RCRDS because I liked the professional level / quality of the label and the artists around.

If you could play any festival, which would it be?

There would be so many but some of my favorites internationally would be – Ultra Miami, Ultra Europe, Tomorrowland, Burning Man and EDC Las Vegas.

How do you get a track started? Tell us about your production process.

My production process really depends on my mood. I always try to capture a certain emotion that I’m feeling, either with a melodic sample or chords. I then move towards the groove and the drums of the song as that will be the basis of song and what people will dance too. However, I’ve recently started to separate my creative process from my technical process. I want to be as creative as possible in the beginning and when the rough idea slowly becomes a song structure then I move on towards the technical things like mixing and mastering.

Upcoming projects? What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on some incredible collaborations with producers in the States which you might hear more about in July J. Other than that, a lot of solo material as well to continue giving my audience Josh Charm music, maybe even do several EP’s

The relationship between a DJ and the audience is crucial, and yet is seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

When it comes to performing overall a truly good DJ can make an entire room feel loved. It’s about generating and sharing experiences, feelings, emotions and understanding those emotions of others bring them to a better place, a higher frequency.
