EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH NATHASSIA

  • Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

My first track was “Someone Like Me” as a featured artist for Soulcast that turned out to be a huge global club hit, A-listed on Kiss FM UK and MTV Dance etc. It all began at ADE (as I am Dutch) where I started work experience for my International Music Management degree at InHolland University. I managed to get a few hours off working at the event to network and I met with London based management company ArchangelUK who agreed to give me a 6 month work placement/internship as a trainee promoter. A few weeks later a well-known singer who was supposed to record the Soulcast track called in sick so I was asked if I could: A. sing and B. stand in for the singer… the rest is history!

  • Tell us about your latest project ‘Change The World’

The song feels strangely prophetic as I wrote the lyrics before the current world changing events had happened. It feels like there has never been a better time to change the world. I was introduced to D3FAI by Tony Byrne from Singleminded Promotions following a meeting with him at ADE last year. D3FAI is based in Argentina so we worked remotely on the track. I was supposed to fly to Argentina to shoot the video with him but unfortunately that was cancelled because of the virus. Instead a cool animated video was produced.  We were all pleased when the video was playlisted on Club MTV, MTV Dance International and Clubland TV and it even made the Club MTV top 20. The track also made the Beatport Big Room top 20 and Cool Cuts top 10 in the UK.

  • Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you?

While studying I was a games tester for Playstation and I even have a credit on Gran Turismo 5!

  • What single night out has been most memorable for you as a DJ and producer?

The best gig was performing live at the Valley of the Kings, Luxor. I was invited by the Nefertiti Festival and it was incredibly special as it was the first time in history that live music was allowed at this sacred place. I also got to meet many of my lovely Egyptian fans some of whom had travelled over 600 km just to see me perform. To top it all I also got to meet the princess of Egypt!

  • Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

Mammoth, Mammoth and also Mammoth! (By Dimitri Vegas, MOGUAI & Like Mike)

  • Dream collaboration and why?

It would be with Nitin Sawhney who I have always admired for both his music and huge influence in the UK music industry, for example he is chair of the PRS foundation. I was most excited when he recently followed me on Twitter!

  • If you could play any festival, which would it be?

Tomorrowland in Belgium.

  • How do you get a track started? tell us about your production process

I tend to start by writing the lyrics and melody. After completing a demo recording of my vocals I then work with producers I know well and begin co-creating the music, which is a back and forward process that can take several months. However, for my next Nathassia single I am producing everything myself which is something I have been planning for a while.

  • Latest project? What are you currently working on?

I am working on the follow up single and live show with D3FAI, I am excited to perform with him at Lollapalooza festival Argentina later in the year. I have several other exciting new releases coming up soon. I am also super busy with my new Goddess Is A DJ podcast and radio show on the EDM Festival Channel for Di.FM.

  • The relationship between a DJ and the audience is crucial, and yet is seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

My DJ career as Goddess Is A DJ is in its infancy as it only began during lockdown but so far I have been live-streaming my DJ mixes to fans from my Boudoir which has been a lovely surprise as so many people have been watching on my Facebook & Twitter. It’s really exciting to turn my first few livestream events into a brand-new radio show for Di.FM.
