Don’t Be Afraid returns with ‘Northern Lights (Remixes)’, a powerful follow-up to Semtek’s ‘Four More Dubs’ EP.
The new release presents six fresh interpretations of the standout track ‘Northern Lights’, reimagined by Mr. G, Wes Baggaley, Ikonika, Ghost Phone, Ummi, and Jas Shaw.
Mr. G, a founding figure of UK techno and long-time DBA collaborator, delivers a darker, more intense take. Wes Baggaley adds evolving synths over a Chain Reaction–style groove for a deep, late-night excursion. Ikonika offers a moody, gothic rework inspired by gqom and UK funky, underscoring her two decades of boundary-pushing production.
Ghost Phone contributes a beatdown version that shifts from dub-leaning half-step to acid footwork energy. Ummi blends broken techno with Banya and Sarangi instrumentation, creating a distinctive South Asian dancefloor sound in his debut production. Rounding out the set, Jas Shaw, one half of Simian Mobile Disco, delivers a slow, chugging acid house interpretation shaped by Detroit lineage and UK tradition.
Benjamin Roth records as Semtek, DJ Persuasion, and other aliases. As Semtek, he channels classic acid house and New Jersey deep house, occasionally branching into techno under the STK name. As DJ Persuasion, he is noted for his acclaimed series of year-by-year mixes spanning 1988 to 1998, some released on cassette by The Trilogy Tapes, Berceuse Heroique, and Blackest Ever Black. He later turned to early hardcore and jungle as DJ Persuasion, releasing tracks such as “Jameela,” “Moon Blues,” “Delirium,” and “Danny ’25,” and collaborated with Ant Miles on the Transmission ’96 LP.
Through his label Don’t Be Afraid, Roth has released landmark albums by Karen Gwyer, rRoxymore, and MGUN, while sub-labels INTA and Lost Futures have produced cult favourites including the Cultureclash LP. Beyond music, Roth divides his time between discussing music and mental health, an issue close to him, and provides photography for several notable releases in recent years.
