EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

1. 2GETHER EP feels deeply rooted in emotion and connection. What was the central inspiration behind this three-track project?

I’d say the inspiration came from how music makes us feel. How on the dancefloor, in the streets, our cars, the music gives humanity its drive. It unifies. Especially House music, the soul of it calls for togetherness. That’s why the vocal sample sets things in motion. “In all of life there is a rhythm, all things living carry out this tune

2. The EP consists of “UMEWE&US,” “2GETHER,” and “Beyond The Void.” How do these tracks connect with one another, and do they tell a larger story when experienced together?

The song titles are a message if you read them in order. UMEWE&US, 2GETHER Beyond The Void. It goes back to unity, to love. We can get through the darkness of today by walking through it hand in hand.

3. Your music often feels as much about emotion as it does about rhythm. How important is it for you to create a feeling rather than simply a groove?

Human’s move off of emotion. Films make us cry, food recalls memories, a sunset can calm the soul. If the music is made with emotion or a certain feeling, that bleeds into the groove itself. Music is meant to be felt, not just heard.

4. You were born in Boston, raised in Charleston, and now live in Naples. How have those different places influenced your musical identity and sound?

Boston and the city of Charleston both are reminders of where I come from. Home. I fell in love with music growing up at an early age. Making Pause Tapes as a kid, not realizing that was a sign that I had an ear for music. Coming to Europe was the Universe placing me where I needed and what I needed to find my creative outlet. I was a Merchant Seaman for 17 years. 13 of those years were spent in Italy. I traveled, collected music, met some incredible people and most of all fell in love with nightlife. I spent a lot of time partying between Naples, Rome and all over the rest of Europe seeing exactly what type of House people were dancing to and loved. I had places to go and hear what was new, I got to hear the classics. Deep cuts, some minimal, some vocal. That’s the sound I grew into. That space between 3am and sunrise. That’s Joseph.

5. There’s a warm, soulful quality throughout this EP. What elements do you focus on in production to create that atmosphere?

I love synths. Whether it’s chords or dreamy pads I’m all for it. It’s the way it brings a different energy to the track. I look at it like mixing a cocktail, a Negroni for instance. You have gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari. You stir up your ingredients with a spoon and ice. Add an orange slice for looks. But the straw, the straw is how you experience everything. It all goes back to “feeling”. You’re creating a mood. So those synth sounds will also be a favorite of mine.

6. House music pioneers like Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard, and Moodymann have influenced your work. What lessons have you taken from those artists and applied to your own music?

Aside from being pioneers, their love of self, independence really pushed me. Love the music. Love the people who share those spaces. Love yourself. But most of all, be yourself.

7. The title track “2GETHER” has a strong sense of intimacy and connection. What does the title represent to you personally?

Be rebellious. Stand up and dance. Live with purpose and dream.

8. In today’s fast-paced digital world, you’ve spoken about music’s ability to move people emotionally and spiritually. Do you feel that responsibility when creating new music?

I don’t know if I’d call it a responsibility. I see it more as an invitation. Every track is me saying, “Come take this journey with me for a few minutes.” Music has always been one of the few things that can bring complete strangers together and make them feel connected. If someone hears one of my records and finds comfort, joy, inspiration, or even just a moment of escape, the music has done its job. The rest is up to the listener. That’s the beauty of art, we all hear or see something different, but for a moment we’re sharing the same experience.

9. “Beyond The Void” has a more reflective and atmospheric character. Was there a particular mood or experience you were drawing from while making that track?

I think with that track, I let the music take over. All of the pieces kind of fell into place. The end result was definitely a nod to growth, spiritualism and the unknown.

10. Looking beyond this release, what direction do you see your sound evolving in, and what can listeners expect from Joseph Robinson next?

I’d love to incorporate some live instruments. There are a few artists I have in mind that I’d like to bounce some ideas off of and see what happens. Specifically a group in Sicily called Orangemun I’d love to work with them.  At some point I’d like to dive into the more electronic side of things. Not rhythm driven, just soundscapes and atmosphere. The horizon looks great from here though, I have another EP on the way and tones of music I’m finishing up. So stay tuned!
